해외직접투자의 지역 결정요인과 군집효과 : 국내 대기업과 중소기업의 차이를 중심으로

초록/요약
최근 해외직접투자 지역 결정요인 연구에서 주목하고 있는 주제 중 하나는 투자 군집현상이다. 그러나 한국 기업들의 해외직접투자 군집을 다룬 연구는 매우 드물다. 본 연구는 한국에서 각 국으로 행해진 해외직접투자에 대한 지역 결정요인과 군집효과를 다룸으로써 국내 연구의 부족함을 메울 수 있을 것이라 기대된다. 특히 한국 산업과 기업 특징을 고려하여, 투자 주체를 한국 대기업과 중소기업으로 나누고, 군집 또한 대기업과 중소기업의 군집으로 나눈 후 각 기업군들의 군집에 대한 효과를 살펴보았다는데 의의가 크다. 1997년부터 2008년까지 한국 대, 중소기업에 의해 이루어진 해외직접투자를 분석 한 결과 대기업은 시장 접근 형의 투자가 활발히 이루어지고 있고, 중소기업은 투자국의 임금과 인프라 수준에 민감하게 반응함이 나타났다. 또한 대기업 투자는 연관 산업 대기업 군집도에는 영향을 받지 않지만, 연관 산업 중소기업 군집도와 동일 산업 대기업, 중소기업 군집도에는 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 중소기업의 경우에는 연관 산업과 동일 산업 모두 대기업, 중소기업 군집도에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 현지 국내 기업들 간 수직적 연계성과 군집으로부터 발생하는 신호, 외부 효과의 이점, 동일 기업군 간 경쟁이 반영된 결과라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 본 연구는 기존 군집을 다룬 국외 선행 연구들에서는 동종 산업 국내 기업 군집도에 대해서 정의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타난 것과 달리, 동종 산업 국내 기업 군집이라도 투자 주체와 군집 기업군에 따라 그 효과와 영향력이 다른 것을 확인할 수 있었다는데 진일보 한 결과를 얻었다고 할 수 있다.

Recently in the international economics literature, agglomeration has been considered as important determinant of new investment. But only a few studies pointed out the importance of industrial agglomerations for the location of foreign direct investment by Korean firms. This paper examines the importance of the other factors in the host countries including the industrial agglomeration along national lines that would attract foreign direct investment by Korean firms. Expecially this study distinguishes between small and medium enterprises and large firms as the investors and differentiates small and medium enterprises's agglomeration and large firm's agglomeration from industry-specific agglomeration of Korean firms. Results using the 5-digit industrial-level data for 1997-2008 show the presence of different effects between small and medium enterprises' agglomeration and large firm's agglomeration. And comparison of the results for small and medium enterprises to the factors that would make their foreign direct investment decision, small and medium enterprises regard the availability of low wage labor, well developed infra structure and all type industrial-specific agglomeration as important elements much more than large firms. The results may be caused by the characteristics and the relationships of Korean small and medium enterprise and large firm.
