The Effect of Climate Change on Rice Yields in Korea

초록/요약

We measure the impact of climate on rice yields in Korea. We use panel data on weather and farm output for 164 counties from 1996 to 2009. Using fixed effect estimation, we find that higher temperatures in the third quarter (May~July) and more precipitation in all quarters reduce average rice yields. Regarding weather variation, more variations of precipitation in the second and third quarters (February~July) substantially reduces rice yields. The findings in this paper suggest that climate change, due to global warming, may negatively affect rice yields in Korea. Because of such a significant reduction of rice supplies, this can lead to social welfare loss.
