An Error Analysis of English Basic Spatial Prepositions in Korean College Students' Writing

본 논문은 영어의 문법 기본 요소 중 하나인 전치사, 그 중에서도 가장 기본적인 전치사 in, on, 그리고 at에 대한 영어를 제 2 또는 제3 언어로 배우는 한국 대학생들의 문법적인 이해도를 알아보고 그들의 글에서 전치사의 오류를 분석해 문제점을 이해하고 정확한 학습방법의 해결책을 제안하고자 한다. 2010년 3월에 신입생을 대상으로 실시한 서강대학교 Placement test의 essay를 모은 Sogang learner corpus의 자료를 바탕으로 ESL/EFL Learner들의 가장 기본적인 공간을 표현하는 전치사 (spatial prepositions)를 ESL/EFL learner들이 영작을 하면서 어떻게 사용하고 있는지 그리고 그에 대한 오류의 여부를 연구하고 그 원인을 찾고자 ESL/EFL을 배우는 환경, 즉 learner들이 배우고 있는 ESL/EFL 문법 교재를 분석하고 전치사에 대해 무엇을 어떻게 배우는지에 대해 연구하고자 한다.

This study aims to investigate the errors of basic spatial prepositions in Sogang University students’ essays and provide information that can help both teachers and learners. The prepositions are one of the notorious challenges to learn in English grammar. Many scholars agreed that mastering the use of prepositions is one of the most difficult tasks English language learners face (Cowan, 2008; Swan, 2005). Even after attaining a high level of proficiency, ESL or EFL students are still confusing prepositions (Celce-Murcia, 2001). To find out how ESL/EFL learners use preposition in writing, the decision was made to investigate learners’ errors through Sogang learner corpus data which was initiated in March, 2010. In this thesis, I’d like to analyze what kinds of errors of preposition in, on, and at those Korean college students make through Sogang learner corpus data and then to compare the prior literature with what ESL/EFL grammar says. By doing so, we can elicit the practical information whether the ESL/EFL grammar book informed by the literature and support by what learner corpus findings show. This can actually help ESL/EFL students by posing pedagogical treatments to alleviate the errors. Learners’ errors were analyzed by standard of classification of errors: (a) wrong preposition, (b) preposition addition, (c) misordering, and (d) others (Dulay et al., 1982). The result of this research showed that the ESL/EFL learners are having a hard time to use preposition at the most, whereas the total tokens of preposition at were the least. The tokens of errors were showed significant amount especially in category (a) wrong preposition (e.g. angry in*) as over 45 percents. By comparing what prior literature says with ES/EFL grammar series, those grammar books shared basic explanations about basic prepositions but fail to mention the problems which indicate subtle differences in meanings. Furthermore, one of ESL grammar book which is extensively employed throughout the world omitted preposition part. As Driven (1993) accounted, all the meanings of one basic preposition are based on their spatial meaning. If we can connect the dots between all the meanings of prepositions, that can save us time and effort to learn prepositions. ESL/EFL grammar series have to find out how to explain connecting those dots. This written based data will lead us to be able to make some pedagogical decisions like grammar instructions in order to alleviate the problems in English language learning.
