The ultimate goal of learning English as a Foreign Language is to read its texts written in English, understand them and accept their culture. Judging from the goal of learning English, reading comprehension is considered as one of the most important language skills. In order to help students improve their reading ability and interest, it becomes necessary for English teachers in Korea to make good use of English newspapers in class which contain a wide variety of topics and immense range of information, and many levels of English. Therefore, the use of English newspapers can be an effective teaching material for increasing students’ reading ability and interest. The main aim of this study is to find out how to develop middle school students’ reading ability by making good use of junior English newspapers published in Korea in English classes. For this study, I observed one class in the 8th grade. The students in the experimental group took English classes with English newspaper materials to compare with the classes with only the English textbook. Before and after the experiment, students answered survey questions about their attitude and interests in reading English newspaper. As a result, I reached three conclusions about using English newspapers as an educational material. First, 82.9% of the students thought that the classes with English newspapers at a comprehensible level increased their interests. Second, 74.3% of students showed positive attitude about questions asking whether reading English newspapers improved their reading skills. Third, it is necessarily required to develop interesting and various teaching methods using English newspapers in order to lead students to participate in the classes creatively and actively. In conclusion, students can improve their reading skills and interests through using English newspapers.

우리가 외국어로서 영어를 배우는 궁극적인 목적은 영어로 의사소통하고 영어로 된 글을 읽고 이해함과 동시에 그들의 문화를 이해하는 데 있다. 세계화와 정보화의 물결 속에 다양한 매체에서 다양한 정보를 받아들이는 매개어인 영어를 이해하는 데 있어서 읽기 능력의 중요성은 점점 더 그 비중이 커져가고 있다. 따라서 영자 신문은 학습자들의 욕구를 다양하게 충족시킬 수 있는 내용을 통해 학습자의 흥미를 증진 시키고 학습 동기를 부여함으로써 읽기 교육에 기여할 수 있는 교육 매체라고 본다. 본 논문에서는 주니어 영자 신문을 읽기 자료로 하여 영어 읽기 능력과 흥미를 향상 시킬 수 있는 읽기 수업의 효과적인 교육 방안을 제시하고 이를 실제 수업에 적용한 후 학생들의 영자 신문 학습에 대한 인식을 알아보는 데 중점을 두었다. 이 연구를 위해 경기도 부천시에 소재한 S중학교 2학년 한 반을 대상으로 3주간에 걸쳐 주 2회 영어 수업 중 매 회 각30분을 할애하여 6차 시의 주니어 영자 신문 활용 수업을 실시했고, 주니어 영자 신문 수업에 참여한 학생들을 대상으로 수업 전과 후에 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 주니어 영자 신문을 활용한 수업은 학생들의 흥미를 유발하는 데 있어서 긍정적인 효과가 있었다. 영자 신문을 활용한 영어 독해 지도 프로그램으로 수업한 학생 중 82.9%가 영자 신문을 활용한 영어 수업이 흥미롭다고 답했고 영자 신문이 교과서 읽기 자료에 비해 3배 이상 흥미 있다고 할 정도로 영자 신문에 대한 호응도가 높았다. 둘째, 인터넷 영자 신문을 통한 읽기 활동이 학습자의 읽기 능력을 향상시킬 수 있을까라는 질문에 대해서는 74.3%의 학생들이 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 반면에 영자 신문이라는 새로운 매체, 신문에 활용되는 용어나 문법 구조의 생소함, 신문 기사 이해를 위한 배경 지식의 부족 등으로 학생들이 영자 신문을 다소 어렵다고 생각하는 경향도 있었다. 셋째, 영자 신문을 활용 수업의 구체적인 형태는 무엇보다도 흥미롭고 수준에 맞는 콘텐츠를 학생들에게 제공하는 것이 우선적으로 필요하고 학생들이 주도적이고 창의적으로 참여할 수 있는 다양한 수업 방식을 적용하는 것이 필요하다. 결론적으로 주니어 영자신문을 활용한 읽기 수업은 학습자의 읽기 능력 향상과 흥미 유발에 있어서 전반적으로는 긍정적인 반응이 나타났다. 교사의 부단한 노력과 준비가 선행되고 체계적인 학습 자료 및 프로그램 개발이 이루어진다면 더욱 효과적이고 긍정적인 결과를 가져올 것이라고 확신한다.
