Climate Change and Mortality in Korea

초록/요약

This paper investigated the relationships between weather conditions and mortality rates in Korea. Using 2000-2008 panel data by administrative districts, this paper analyzed the various relationships between weather conditions and mortality rates for temperature variable forms ?C linear and nonlinear(quadratic and cubic functional forms) ?C through the fixed effects model considered with three fixed effects ?C district, year, and season. As the results of these analyses, weather conditions are statistically significant factors of mortality. Especially, the temperatures maximizing mortality rates are 34.12?H(1.18→) for male and 32.05?H(0.03→) for female. On the other hand, the temperatures minimizing mortality rates are 63.81?H(17.67→) for male and 75.45?H(24.14→) for female. Moreover, annual mortality rates will decrease about 1% by the end of 21st because of warmer climate in Korea.
