초록/요약
This thesis argues that Sherman Alexie suggests a path of incorporation into American society for Native Americans by way of self-reflection and abandonment of tribalism in his 2007 novel, Flight. Native Americans have voiced their history of being invaded and ravaged, the hardship of their lives in the white-dominant American society, or their unstable identity through literature; often this historical and political imperative has led to positions of tribalism. However, in Flight, Sherman Alexie shows that Native Americans can become individuals that are free from the trauma of the past, because one？s will and choices affect his life more than historical facts or experience. In Flight, the Ghost Dance serves to structure the protagonist's journey of self-reflection, and this thesis examines how Alexie uses the Ghost Dance to present his argument for forgiveness and inclusiveness. In other words, the protagonist becomes able to listen to the voice inside him as he confronts both national and personal history, which allows him to eventually forgive not only himself but others also？this allows him to join American mainstream society in an inclusive manner. Deeply affected by September 11, 2001, Alexie rejects tribalism and pursues self-reflection that enables individualism and inclusion.

본 논문은 셔먼 알렉시가 그의 2007년 作 『비행』을 통해 미국 원주민들이 자기 성찰을 거쳐 미국 주류사회로 편입하는 길을 제시며 이 작품을 시작으로 부족주의에서 돌아서고 있다고 주장한다. 그 동안 원주민계 미국문학은 침해 당한 자신들의 역사, 백인 중심 미국 사회 내에서의 삶의 어려움 또는 원주민계 미국인들의 불안정한 정체성의 목소리를 담아왔다. 이러한 역사적이고 정치적인 초점은 곧잘 부족주의를 강화시켜왔다. 그러나 셔먼 알렉시는 『비행』에서 미국 원주민들이 과거의 트라우마로부터 자유롭고 개인으로 인정받을 수 있는 주체로 설 수 있다고 주장하며, 이것은 과거의 사실이나 경험보다 개인의 의지와 선택이 삶에 더 큰 영향을 끼치기 때문임을 보여주고 있다. 작품 속에서 주인공의 자기 성찰 여정은 고스트 댄스 과정을 밟듯이 진행되며, 본 논문은 그 과정을 추적하며 알렉시가 고스트 댄스를 통하여 어떻게 용서와 포용에 대한 그의 입장을 제시하는지 보여준다. 다시 말해, 주인공은 역사와 개인사를 직시함으로써 자기 내면의 목소리를 들을 수 있게 되고, 이 과정을 통해 결국 자신 뿐 아니라 타인들도 용서하게 된다. 그는 자기 성찰을 통해 비로소 포용적인 태도로 미국 주류 사회에 합류하게 되는 것이다. 2001년 9/11 테러사건을 계기로 알렉시는 부족주의를 거부하고 포용과 개개인 존중을 가능케 하는 자기 성찰을 추구하고 있다.
