This thesis aims to examine the process of meaning extension of polysemous Korean and Chinese physical words. This study describes the polysemy of Korean and Chinese physical words and presents the tendency of meaning extension. It also investigates how multiple meanings of polysemous components are reflected in the formation of complex words based on Korean physical words. Chapter 2 examines some aspects of meaning extension from Korean and Chinese physical words: ‘ear’ and ‘耳’, ‘eye’ and ‘眼, 目’, ‘nose’ and ‘鼻’, ‘mouth’ and ‘嘴, 口’, ‘face’ and ‘臉 面’, ‘head’ and ‘頭’, ‘hand’ and ‘手’, ‘foot’ and ‘足，脚’ from the perspective of cognitive semantics. It further identifies homogeneity and heterogeneity which are shown in the process of meaning extension of Korean and Chinese physical words. It describes aspects of meaning extension of physical words by dividing into simple words and complex words in order to study how multiple meanings of polysemous components are reflected in the formation of complex words. It also presents extended meanings with semantic features based on certain semantic classification scheme of nouns in order to capture the tendency of meaning extension. Chapter 3 presents the tendency of meaning extension of Korean and Chinese physical words based on the studies of Chapter 2 and investigates semantic constraints of polysemous components shown in the formation of complex words based on Korean physical words. First, it classifies the type of items which have the same semantic features to figure out the tendency of meaning extension. Next, it examines the items of the meaning of each category and presents the tendency of meaning extension of Korean and Chinese physical words in diagram. It divides derivated words and compound words when dealing with semantic constraints shown in the formation of complex words for polysemous components. Chapter 4 makes a summary of overall contents and also presents some problems which have not been solved in this study. 본 연구는 한·중 다의적 신체어를 대상으로 그 의미 확장 과정을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 한·중 신체어의 다의성을 기술하고 이를 바탕으로 의미 확장의 경향성을 제시하고자 한다. 한국어 신체어를 대상으로 다의적 구성 성분의 여러 의미가 복합어 형성에서 어떻게 반영되어 나타나는지를 고찰하기도 한다. 2장에서는 인지의미론의 관점에서 의미 확장이 잘 이루어진 한·중 신체어 ‘귀’와 ‘耳’, ‘눈’과 ‘眼, 目’, ‘코’와 ‘鼻’, ‘입’과 ‘嘴, 口’, ‘얼굴’과 ‘臉, 面’, ‘머리’와 ‘頭’, ‘손’과 ‘手’, ‘발’과 ‘足，脚’을 대상으로 의미 확장 양상을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 한·중 신체어가 의미 확장 과정에서 드러난 동질성과 이질성을 확인한다. 다의적 구성 성분의 여러 의미가 복합어 형성에서 어떻게 반영되어 나타나는지를 고찰하기 위해 단일어와 복합어로 나누어 신체어의 의미 확장 양상을 살펴보기로 한다. 또한 의미 확장의 경향성을 포착하기 위해 일정한 명사 의미 분류 체계를 바탕으로 확장된 주변 의미들에 의미 자질을 부여하고 이들을 유형화한다. 3장에서는 2장의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 한･중 신체어의 의미 확장 경향성을 제시하고 한국어 신체어를 중심으로 다의적 구성 성분이 복합어 형성에서 나타난 의미 제약 현상을 고찰한다. 먼저 의미 확장의 경향성을 파악하기 위해 같은 의미 자질을 가지는 의미 항목들을 유형화한다. 다음으로 각 부류의 의미 항목수도 헤아려 한･중 신체어의 의미 확장 경향성을 도식으로 제시한다. 다의적 구성 성분이 복합어 형성에서 나타난 의미 제약 현상을 다룰 때 파생어와 합성어로 나누어 논의한다. 4장에서는 전체적인 내용을 요약하여 마무리를 한다. 아울러 이 글에서 해결하지 못한 남은 문제를 제시한다. 핵심어: 신체어, 의미 확장, 의미 자질, 경향성, 복합어 형성, 의 미 제약
