테네시 윌리엄스는『욕망이란 이름의 전차』를 통해 자신의 욕망을 채우려는 나약하지만 끈질긴 인간의 삶을 그리므로 써 그 과정이 어떻게 진화되어 결론을 맺는가를 블랑쉬 드보아라는 여성을 통해 제시하고 있다. 블랑쉬처럼 욕망으로 뒤 덮인 한 인간의 황폐하고 절박한 인생을 통해, 인간의 욕망의 끝은 어디인가 라는 질문을 독자와 관객에게 던진다. 블랑쉬는 특별한 과거와 현재 그리고 불투명한 미래를 안고 살아가면서 다른 인간들과 소통을 꿈꾼다. 하지만 그녀를 외면하는 사람들로 인해 그녀만의 소통방법을 찾을 수 밖에 없는데, 그것은 소위 연극 무대에도 중요한 역할을 하는 “제스처를 통한 소통”이다. 존재가 무시되고, 인간관계에 있어 더 이상의 발전을 기대할 수 없는 그녀가 선택한 방법은 제스처로써 자신의 욕망을 드러내고, 채워가는 방식이다. 따라서『욕망이란 이름의 전차』에서 그녀가 보여주는 제스처는 그녀만의 특별한 이야기가 된다. 그녀의 제스처를 분석하여 침묵 속에서 나타나는 그녀의 긴장감, 애절함, 좌절감, 그리고 실패로 거듭되는 그녀의 욕망이 의식적으로 그리고 무의식적으로 표현되는 방식을 재구성하는 것이 이 글의 목표이다. 이러한 전제로 본문에서는 일반적으로 거론되는 제스처의 의미, 무대 위의 제스처에 대한 브레히트(Brecht)의 무대이론, 딘(Dean)과 카라(Carra)의 “stage movements”에 관한 논의를 받아들여 블랑쉬의 제스처의 양상을 재구성하고자 한다. 또한 작품 전체의 맥락 속에서 그녀의 제스처가 제시하는 또 다른 이야기가 있음을 확인하기 위해 우선 블랑쉬의 심리, 다른 인물들간의 관계 등을 함께 고찰해 본다. 연극무대 위의 여러 가지 동작들은 각각의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 의식적으로 그리고 반무의식적으로 나타나곤 하는데, 이 논문은 훈련된 연기자들의 연극적인 제스처를 배제하고 작품 속에 표현되는 블랑쉬의 제스처만을 다룬다. 블랑쉬의 욕망과 그녀의 소통 방법, 소통의 실패와 좌절을 일반적인 제스처 이론과 접목시켜 분석하려고 시도한다. 윌리엄스는 인간의 욕망이 어디서 시작되고, 그 끝은 어디에 있는가에 대한 분명한 대한 메시지를 전달하려 하기보다는, 블랑쉬의 삶을 통해 그것이 전개하는 과정의 고통스러운 현실성에 초점을 두고 있다. 이처럼 블랑쉬의 제스처는 윌리엄스가 만들어 낸 또 하나의 이야깃거리로 세분화 되어, 흥미로운 사실들을 제공하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 가치가 있다.

In A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams portrays a life of Blanche Dubois, a desperate woman full of desire, and describes how she draws her own life through fantasies and illusion because she is disregarded and ignored by the people around her, conducting a thorough failure in communication. Therefore she chooses her own means to communicate with them, using the display of gestures. In drama texts or in theatrical performances, the characters or the actors choose their utmost convenient and effective method to communicate with other characters or the audience. Gesture is one of the methods in delivering certain messages and it is widely used as a visual communication. Blanche is thus finding her utmost method, the gesture, to deliver her messages, too. The theories of theatrical gesture are introduced to explain the general definition of gestures and the movement to acknowledge the gesture of Blanche Dubois. Her movements and gestural language will be explained within the theories of Brecht’s Gestus and Dean and Carra’s “stage movements.” This thesis is an attempt to see what sorts of gesture Blanche is using to fulfill her desire and communicate with others. Her gestural language is a distinctive system of communication which creates a sub-plot within the whole story. Blanche’s gestural language becomes Williams’ another genius framework to design a hidden story. Through the life of Blanche Dubois, he also shares the general notion on “desire” and its consequences, too. Blanche’s gestural language also asks for an explanation of her psychological background as well as her relationship with other characters and whether the communication is a success or a failure. And her gestural language is analyzed within the textual lines and stage directions.
