윌리엄 셰익스피어의 역사극『헨리4세』의 등장인물 폴스타프는“뚱뚱한 기사”(the fat knight)로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 다른 등장인물들은 그의 거대한 체형을 나태, 과식, 탐욕의 결과로 여기며 그것을 근거로 그를 조롱하거나 비난하지만 작품 속에는 비만에 대한 양가적인 태도가 동시에 존재한다. 폴스타프의 비만은 때로는 세속적이고 반종교적인 특징으로, 또 때로는 후덕함과 중세 봉건영주들의 가치덕목이었던 부의 분배를 위한 체형으로 해석되어왔다. 폴스타프의 체형은 도를 넘어서는 넘침의 상징인데 이것은 기사라는 그의 사회적 지위와 연결해 생각했을 때 더 큰 의미를 지닌다. 중세사회의 기사는 그 누구보다도 기사도라는 사회적 규범과 가치로부터 자유롭지 못한 존재인데 폴스타프는 그의 신분에 적합하지 않게도 사회적 가치로부터 자유로운 존재이다. 사회적 가치를 주도적으로 실현하는 것이 요구되는 신분인 그가 사회적 가치를 비웃고 그러한 그의 특성이 비만, 즉 한도를 벗어나는 특질로 시각화되는데 그것은 또한 폴스타프의 사회적 괴물성- 규범과 가치의 틀에 얽매이지 않고 자신이 속한 신분을 비웃는-의 상징이기도 하다. 할이 즉위하자마자 폴스타프와의 관계를 부정하고 그를 사회에서 배제할 수 밖에 없었던 것은 바로 폴스타프의 사회적 괴물과도 같은 이 통제불가능성 때문이었다고 해석할 수 있다.

Falstaff in William Shakespeare’s Henry IV is most known as the “fat knight.” Other characters mock his obesity as the result of laziness, glutton and greed, but we can find the opposite attitude toward obesity at the same time. Falstaff’s fatness is sometimes considered as carnal or anti-Protestant, sometimes as the symbol of feudal lords’ largesse which was one of the most important virtues of them. When we see Falstaff’s obesity as a symbol of excess, we need to connect it with his social status as a knight in the chivalric society. Knights are to be the agents of chivalric codes, but Falstaff never intends to live up to the codes. He even mocks the social value. Falstaff’s obesity is a visualized symbol of his uncontrollable characteristic. A knight who mocks the value of chivalry becomes monstrous. When it is combined with his monstrous body, his monstrosity necessitates Hal’s rejection as he becomes the king, who needs to set up the rules and preserve the codes of the society.
