초록/요약
한국에서의 영어교육은 초기부터 영어의 수동태에 대해 많이 집중되어 있다. 따라서 영어를 외국어 (EFL) 로 배우는 대부분의 학생들은 배우는 수준이 올라감에 따라 영어의 수동태나 순수 자동사 또는 순수 타동사에 대한 이해도도 올라가지만 많은 학생들이 영어의 중간태에 대한 개념을 생소해 하거나 이해하지 못하는 경우가 많다. 본 연구는 그러한 한국의 영어교육 실태를 바탕으로 한국 학생들의 영어 중간태에 대한 이해도를 고등학생과 대학생의 참여자를 바탕으로 실험해 보았다. 우선 영어의 중간태를 ergative construction과 middle construction 으로 나누어서 그것들의 특징과 또한 그 두 개념의 비슷한 점과 차이점을 선행연구를 바탕으로 정리하고, 그 개념을 바탕으로 학생들의 이해도를 알아보기 위해서 설문지를 작성하였다. 설문지는 영어의 중간태에 대한 기본적인 개념을 묻는 질문들로만 구성하였고 학생들의 이해실태를 측정하기 위해 가능한 쉽고 간단하게 작성되었다. 그 동안의 연구를 바탕으로 본 연구는 두 가지의 가설을 가지고 있는데, 그 하나는 학생들의 중간태에 대한 이해도는 순수자동사에 대한 이해도에 비해 떨어진다는 것이고, 또 하나는 학생들이 영어의 ergative construction 문장을 제시 받았을 때 능동태보다는 수동태를 선택하는 비율이 높다는 것이다. 마지막으로 위에서 제시한 실험의 결과를 바탕으로 한국에서의 영어교육이 지향해야 할 점을 알아보고 영어의 다른 동사의 형태뿐 아니라 중간태에 대한 개념에 대한 이해가 중요한지 밝히고자 한다.

Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners are exposed to the English passive forms or other verb forms like pure intransitive or pure transitive verbs because the English education focuses on them from the early stage of learning. Therefore, a lot of students become familiar with them as their English proficiency level progresses. However, students are not used to the English middle voice, and many of them do not know even the existence of the English middle voice. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' understanding of the English middle voice. First of all, the middle voice is divided into ergative construction and middle construction in this study, and theories and previous surveys as well as similarities and differences between ergative and middle construction are introduced. According to the theories that have been discussed, survey questions are composed, and the questions are made as easy and simple as possible in order to test students' understanding of the English middle voice. This thesis has two hypotheses. One is Korean EFL learners' understanding about the English middle voice is not as good as other English verb forms like pure intransitive verbs. The other is students tend to choose passive forms when they were presented English ergative construction. The result shows that Korean EFL learners are not familiar with the concepts and characteristics of the English middle voice and the result does not differ between high school and university students. Also, high school students tended to choose passive voice when they were presented with the ergative verbs, but the preference between active and passive for university students was exactly the same when they were presented with the ergative verbs.
