Indirectness and Politeness of Request Strategies in Korean and American English

This thesis examines the similarities and differences in request speech act strategies in Korean and US English. Previous examinations on cross-linguistic and cross-cultural studies on requests have put a great emphasis on the linguistic universals and specificities among western-languages. These studies have failed to identify the similarities and differences between western and eastern languages in the use of request speech acts. Not only they have limited the range of the subject languages, but also they could not suggest the overall characteristics of the requests in studies of those languages. In order to fill the gap in this research of request speech acts, this present study aims to offer the overall similarities and differences between one western language and one eastern language, US English and Korean. The investigation includes identifying different request strategies, external and internal request modifications, and the perception of the level of the politeness of different request strategies. In this present study, the data have been collected by the means of the survey questionnaire. 29 Korean and 31 US citizens responded to the questions. The age of Korean and American respondents varies from 10 to 69. Korean respondents mainly reside in Incheon, Korea, and American respondents in Boston, Massachusetts, the United States. The analysis of the requests in Korean and US English is mainly based on CCSARP (Cross-Cultural Speech Acts Realisation Patterns) (Blum-Kulka and Olshtain 1984). To identify the social and situational variations in the use of requests, the frequencies of the different request strategies and modifications in different social situations are calculated. The results suggest the use of the request strategies is highly influenced by intra-linguistic, social, and situational factors. The use of requests in Korean and US English shows that the request strategies and modifications are highly culture-specific and the situational factors and age also have a strong effect on the choice of the request strategies and modifications. To increase the possibility of the request being accepted by the hearer and to be more polite, the speakers in both languages used a variety of modification strategies. The results indicate that Korean speakers employ a wider range of external and internal modifications and use modification strategies more frequently than US English speakers. In terms of the perspective of requests, Korean speakers use more hearer-orientated requests than US English speakers. The perception test suggests that Korean and US English speakers share the perception of politeness of the request strategies to some extent, but there is not the total agreement on the perception of politeness of requests.

본 논문은 한국어와 미국영어의 요청화행전략의 유사점과 차이점을 분석하였다. 다른 언어와 문화사이의 요청화행에 대한 선행연구는 서양언어 사이의 보편성과 차이점을 강조하였다. 그러한 연구들은 서양언어와 동양언어 사이에서 요청화행의 동질성과 이질성을 분석하지 못했는데, 그 이유는 연구주제 언어가 제한되었을 뿐만 아니라 언어에서 발견되는 요청의 전반적인 모습을 증명하지 못했다는 문제가 있기 때문이다. 현재까지의 요청화행연구의 부족한 점을 채우기 위해서, 본 논문은 동양언어와 서양언어, 특히 한국어와 미국식영어 사이의 요청화행전략의 공통점과 차이점을 연구하였다. 다양한 요청전략, 외적수정 (external modification), 내적수정 (internal modification), 요청전략의 공손도에 대한 화자의 인식를 분석하였다. 본 논문의 자료는 설문지에 의해서 수집되었다. 29명의 한국어 화자와 31명의 미국영어 화자가 설문에 응답했다. 응답자의 나이는 10세에서 69세에 이르며, 한국어 화자들은 주로 대한민국 인천광역시에 거주하고 있으며, 미국영어 화자들은 미국 매사츄세츠주의 보스톤에 거주하고 있다. 한국어와 영어의 요청 분석은 Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984)의 CCSARP (Cross-Cultural Speech Acts Realisation Patterns)에 바탕을 두었다. 요청의 사회적 변이와 상황적 변이를 연구하기 위해서 다른 사회적 환경과 상황적 환경에서의 요청화행과 수정의 빈도를 계산했다. 연구 결과는 언어자체 요소, 사회적 요소, 상황적 요소가 요청전략의 사용에 강한 영향을 주고 있음을 보여준다. 한국어와 미국영어의 요청은 다르게 사용되며, 상황적 요소와 화자의 나이는 요청전략과 수정 선택에 강한 영향을 주었다. 한국어 화자는 미국영어 화자보다 더 많은 청자 중심적인 요청을 사용하였다. 요청을 할 때, 공손도를 높이거나 요청이 받아들여질 확률을 높이기 위해서 다양한 수정전략이 사용되었는데, 외적 수정(external modification)과 내적수정(internal modification) 모두 한국어 화자가 더 많이 사용하고, 더욱 다양한 전략을 사용하는 것으로 드러났다. 요청의 공손도에 대한 인지 테스트는 한국어 화자와 미국영어 화자가 요청 전략의 공손도에 대한 어느 정도 비슷하게 느끼지만, 완전히 동일하게 느끼지는 않는 것으로 드러났다.
