Intelligence is a crucial part of any counterinsurgency campaign. Counterinsurgent actors often carry out various intelligence activities in order to defeat insurgencies. But these intelligence activities are difficult to sustain effectively, if counterinsurgent actors have understood a little of the important role of intelligence in the counterinsurgency campaign. Lack of full understanding might lead counterinsurgency campaign limited or distorted. This study posits that four critical counterinsurgent intelligence factors are necessary for successful counterinsurgent campaign. We may understand its importance through a comparison between Iraq and Afghanistan wars on terror. I argue that counterinsurgent actors can successfully carry out intelligence activities in; (1) preparing intelligence plan previously; (2) aiming at the populace; (3) intensifying lower counterinsurgent echelons; and (4) timely sharing of information among counterinsurgent actors. Through the abovementioned intelligence factors, I show some suggestions for possible counterinsurgency event by the Republic of Korea in case of the Reunification of the two Koreas, as well as the Peacekeeping Operation mission under the United Nations. This study will contribute an insight to the future counterinsurgency in Korean society.
