Cultural Politics of Places in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea

진 리스는 『광막한 사르가소 바다』 (Wide Sargasso Sea 1966) 에서 샬롯 브론테의 『제인 에어』 (Jane Eyre 1847) 에 등장하는 미친 여인, 버싸의 목소리를 들려준다. 소설은 버싸의 이야기만 들려주는 것이 아니라 그녀와 결혼하기 위해 서인도 제도로 건너온 어린 시절의 로체스터가 어떻게 새로운 세상을 바라보는가도 보여준다. 그 동안 학계에서는 버싸와 제인의 유사점, 혹은 버싸의 크레올이라는 정체성에 관점을 두고 소설을 분석해 내는 경향이 있었지만 최근 들어서 소설에 드러나는 공간에 대한 연구가 이루어지고 있는데, 본 논문은 소설 속에 드러난 공간에 초점을 맞추어 소설을 분석해 보고자 했다. 주체, 권력, 공간은 한 장소를 구성하는 이들의 문화를 구성하는 요소들로 인물들이 공간을 어떻게 받아들이고, 이해하고, 영향을 미치는지 알 수 있다. 또한 이를 통해 공간과 그곳을 구성하는 주체, 그리고 주체가 가진 권력이 어떻게 서로 영향을 주고 있는지를 알 수 있다. 소설에 나오는 공간은 쿨리부리 에스테이트, 그랑부아, 영국 이렇게 세 곳으로 구성되어 있다. 쿨리부리 에스테이트는 유럽인들이 경제적 이익 창출을 위해 사탕수수 농장으로 변환시킨 공간으로, 유럽인과 흑인 노예들, 그리고 서인도 제도의 여성들 사이의 권력관계를 통해 유럽인들이 어떻게 그 공간을 구성하고 구성원들에게 권력을 행사하는지를 자명하게 보여주는 공간이다. 그랑부아는 앙투아네트와 이름없는 남편의 신혼을 위한 공간임과 동시에 그들간의 권력 투쟁의 배경이 되는 장소이다. 남편은 새로운 공간으로 떠나는 여행 중이라고 볼 수 있는데 남편이 읽어내는 공간에 대한 묘사를 통해 주체와 공간의 권력관계를 볼 수 있다. 유럽인들은 자신들이 소유하고 있다고 믿는 이국적이고 미지의 공간을 식민지주의적인 관점으로 읽어 냄으로써 공간은 그저 그들에게 속한 공간, 그들이 지배해야 하는 공간으로 여겨진다. 남편은 공간을 묘사해 가면서 감정의 변화를 겪는데 이는 불안감으로 시작하여, 매혹됨을 넘어 혐오감으로 귀결됨을 알 수 있다. 결국, 남편의 여행은 권력을 차지하지 못함으로 끝이 나게 된다. 본 논문은 물리적, 지리적인 면으로 서인도 제도의 쿨리부리와 그랑부아 묘사에 초점을 맞추었지만, 그 공간 안에서 영국인들이 삶을 영위하는 공간은 서인도 제도내의 작은 영국이라고 여겨진다. 유럽인들이 식민주의자로서 권력을 행사함으로써 서인도 제도에는 새로운 공간과 문화가 형성되는 것이다. 소설 속의 주체들이 어떻게 공간을 구성하는지를 파악함으로써 공간과 주체, 권력은 한 사회를 구성하는 요소들임을 알 수 있다. 이름 없는 남편의 공간에 대한 이해 부족으로 생긴 공간과 자신에 대한 무가치, 그리고 유럽과 서인도 제도 어느 곳에도 속하지 못하던 앙투아네트의 소속감을 찾는 과정을 따라감으로써 공간을 구성하는 주체와 공간의 관계를 분석해 본다. 또한 공간의 문화정치학이라는 관점을 제시해 작품 속의 인물들과 그들이 묘사해내는 공간을 재창조해봄으로써 『광막한 사르가소 바다』 의 해석에 다른 면을 새롭게 고찰해 볼 수 있을 것이다.

In Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Jean Rhys gave voice to the mad woman [Bertha] in Charlotte Bront？？s Jane Eyre (1847) to tell her story. In the novel, not only Antoinette but her husband [Rochetser] tells how he has interpreted the West Indies. From the description of the places in the novel, the reader can find how subjects and power influence each other. From the viewpoint within the cultural politics of places, the connection between subjects, power, and the places is revealed through the description of the places. There are three places in the novel: Coulibri Estate, Granbois, and England. Coulibri Estate is place that Europeans transform into the sugar plantation for their profit. How Europeans exploit the black and women of color under the name of colonialism is physically and discursively inscribed in this place. Granbois, the honeymoon house for Antoinette and the nameless husband, is the place of the conflicts on authority. The husband starts the journey to the West Indies and interprets the strange and exotic place. During the journey, the husband？s feeling toward the place changes from discomfort, attraction, and then into hatred. The nameless husband remains with the sense of nothingness because he fails to get authority over the place. The places are transformed by subjects？ power, and the people are also influenced from the place and power. This thesis examines the interrelation between subjects and power which is inscribed in the places. The husband has the sense of nothingness which comes from the lack of understanding about the West Indies and Antoinette looks for her identity that does neither belong to England nor the West Indies. By examining the places in the novel which have not been discussed much, the reader can realize that subjects, power, and the places are connected and influenced from each other. Focusing on the places of the novel will give a new perspective to the reading of Wide Sargasso Sea in light of cultural politics of places.
