Although half is commonly used word in various fields from daily conversations to professional documents, the accurate use of half, especially the usage between a half and half a, appears ambiguous with no information provided in learners’ grammar books. Consider the following two sentences: (i) Phil would give him half a day more; (ii) Phil would give him a half day more. Is there a difference in meaning between (i) and (ii)? Which of the expressions is used more frequently? Is there a tendency of choosing a certain phrase? To answer these questions, this paper attempts to clarify the indistinct practice half, especially between a half and half a, computed based on corpus data to observe the authentic usage of each phenomenon. Some findings are addressed through this study: First, a half is much more frequently used in spoken English compared to written English. Second, a half often placed followed by the conjunction and when it is used. Third, a half can be defined as an independent variable while half a/an is a dependent variable based on its predisposition and sentence structure. The observation addresses the importance of more distinct clarification on grammatical usage of half in learners’ grammar instructions to alleviate the confusion and misinterpretation it might cause in English language learning.

영어의 관사중의 하나인 half(반)는 일상생활에서부터 전문적인 문서나 대화에서 흔히 사용되는 말인 반면 영어를 제 2외국어로 배우는 학생들을 위한 문법책에서는 그에 맞는 정확한 쓰임새를 가르치지 않거나 전혀 다루지 않고 있다. 다음 두 문장을 보면: (i) Phil would give him a half day more. (ii) Phil would give him a half day more. 예문의 두 문장은 의미에서의 차이를 가지는가? 어떤 문장이 더 자주 사용되는가? 화자는 둘 중 하나의 문장을 쓸 때 어떤 의도를 가지고 문장을 선택하는가? 이 논문은 이런 문제들에 대답하기 위해 half 의 더 정확한 사용과 그 쓰임새, 특히 a half 와 half a 의 구분을 코퍼스를 사용하여 명확하게 정의하고자 한다. 이 논문에서 발견된 답은 다음과 같다: 첫째, a half 는 쓰기와 비교해서 말하기에서 더 자주 사용된다. 둘째, a half 는 half a 와 비교해 접속사 and 와 결합해 사용 되는 경우가 대부분이다. 셋째, 문장 속에서의 구조와 배열 그리고 의미를 바탕으로 볼 때 a half 는 ‘independent variable’로 half a 는 ‘dependant variable’로 정의 될 수 있다. 이 실험은 half 의 사용에 있어 영어를 제 2언어로 배우는 학생의 혼란과 잘못된 해석의 문제점을 이해하고 명확한 학습방법의 필요성과 그에 알맞은 답을 연구함으로써 그의 정확한 학습방법의 해결책을 제안한다.
