The Six-Party Talks from the Perspective of Network Theory : A Security Cooperation in Northeast Asia?

초록/요약

While the ideas and suggestions in terms of security cooperation are introduced in principle, none of them has been fully realized at the government level in Northeast Asia. Amid growing necessity of security cooperation in Northeast Asia, there was a meaningful development in September 2005 at the forth round of the Six-Party Talks. Thus, the aim of the thesis is to examine the possibility of security cooperation in Northeast Asia, focusing on the Six-Party Talks from the perspective of network theory. The network theory reveals how each unit is linked with others in terms of certain ties, and how the social structure of relationships around a person, group, or organization affects beliefs or behavior. For gaining theoretical insights to guide this study, this thesis introduces concepts and literature drawn from network theory. Based on the network theory analysis, the achievement of the Six-Party Talks and transformational relations of the neighboring countries are studied. Accordingly, this thesis contemplates the possibilities of security cooperation to improve the security environment and seek for alternatives of cooperation in Northeast Asia.
