본 논문은 차세대 DVD의 두 포맷인 Blu-ray DISC와 HD-DVD의 채택에 있어서 가장 크게 작용한 요인이 무엇인지 크게 소프트웨어적 측면과 하드웨어적 측면에서의 관점에서 분석한 연구이다.
연구방법으로는 전문가 집단 심층 면접법(Depth Interview)을 사용하였으며 태원 엔터테인먼트, SM-Pictures, KD미디어 등 전문가 집단 인터뷰 및 각종 문헌 자료를 통해 연구가 진행되었다.
차세대 표준 채택에 있어서 가장 중요한 부분이 첫 번째 파워풀한 콘텐츠 로써 초기에 20세기폭스, Sony 픽쳐스, 디즈니, MGM 등 강력한 영화 콘텐츠를 확보한 회사들이 이미 Blu-ray 진영에 줄을 섰고 중도의 길을 걸었지만 워너 브러더스 또한 마지막에 힘을 실어 주었다.
또한 Blu-ray의 강력한 저작권 보호기능과 50GB의 대용량을 기반으로 하는 Blu-ray 쪽이 콘텐츠를 공급하는 메이저 영화사 입장에서 고화질 콘텐츠를 구현하고 수익화 시키는데 훨씬 유리하다고 판단되었기 때문에 Blu-ray 쪽에 힘을 실어준 큰 요인이라 생각된다.
하드웨어 측면인 플레이어 가격 경쟁을 통한 시장 확대 전략에서는 HD-DVD 진영이 공격적으로 펼쳐 나갔지만 워너브러더스가 앞으로 Blu-ray만 지원하겠다고 밝힌 이후 미국 최대 할인점 월마트, 최대 DVD 우편 서비스업체 넷플릭스, 최대 온라인 쇼핑몰 아마존이 줄줄이 HD-DVD 진영에 등을 돌렸다. 결과적으로 워너 브러더스의 선택이 차세대 DVD 표준 채택에 있어서 결정적인 원인이 되었다고 판단된다.

This article analyzes and examines the main factor that determined next generation DVD format of Blu-ray Dics and HD-DVD from the angles of hardware and software.
Expert group depth interview of Taewon entertainment, SM-picture and KD media and various documents are used in the research.
The most important part is the powerful content. Powerful movie content suppliers such as 20 century fox, Sony pictures, Disney and MGM supported Blu-ray technology from the beginning. Later on, Warner Brothers joined them from neutral position.
Furthermore, Blu-ray technology provides strong patent security and large capacity which make major movie producers judge it as profitable and suitable for high-quality content.
HD-DVD was aggressive to expanding market assuming price war but Wall mart (the biggest discount store), Netplix (the largest DVD postal service) and Amazon (the biggest on-line shopping mall) turned against HD-DVD after Warner Brothers declared to support Blu-ray format. Therefore, the Warner Brothers’ decision was critical to the next generation DVD standard.
