이 논문은 ‘토머스 머턴의 회심체험’을 연구한 것이다. 논문의 구조는 다음과 같다. 먼저 젤피(Donald L. Gelpi)의 회심이론과 역동성을 제시하면서, 그의 회심이론의 바탕이 되는 로너간의 회심이론과 퍼스 철학의 핵심부분을 살펴보았다.
젤피는 자신의 회심이론을 통해 전통적 회심이론의 차원과 폭을 뛰어넘을 뿐만 아니라, 로너간의 회심이론에서 간과되었던 회심의 사회적 측면과 관계적인 측면까지 확장된 사회정치적 회심의 측면을 새로이 제시, 전개해나간다.
본문에서는 이러한 젤피 회심이론을 바탕으로 토머스 머턴의 회심체험 연구에 다각도로 적용해보았다. 먼저 생애부분을 유년기, 학생시절, 그리고 수도생활 3부분으로 나누어서 회심의 측면에서 고찰해보았다. 둘째, 머턴 회심의 중요한 두 골격이 되는 도덕적 회심체험과 지성적 회심체험을 면밀하고 깊이 살펴본 다음 그 역동성을 고찰해보았다. 셋째, 위의 두 회심체험을 통해 나타나는 머턴 회심체험의 특수성인 ‘죽음’과 내적 자아를 통한 ‘하나’ 됨에 대해 고찰해보았다. 머턴에게 있어 ‘내적 자아’(內的 自我)로의 추구와 여정의 길은 그의 회심과 영성의 핵심개념이라고 말할 수 있다.
끝으로 머턴 회심체험이 가지는 현대적 의미와 전망에 대해 고찰했다. 이 부분은 회심의 최고 단계이자 총체적인 표현양식인 사회정치적 회심의 결과이다. 특히 그가 제시하는 비폭력이 인류의 미래와 평화에 근원적인 통찰력과 도덕적 위기를 극복하고 회복할 수 있는 대안임을 밝히려고 했다.

In this thesis, research was undertaken into the ''Conversion Experience of Thomas Merton''. The structure of this thesis is as follows: First, considering the Conversion theory and dynamics of Donald L. Gelpi, the Conversion theory of Bernard Lonergan, which is the basis of Gelpi''s conversion theory, and the core philosophy of C. S. Peirce, were studied.
To Gelpi, through his Conversion theory, the limited size and dimensions of traditional Conversion theory were overcome, and also the social and relational aspect of Conversion, which had been overlooked in Lonergan''s Conversion theory, was newly introduced and developed.
In main structure, the content of Gelpi''s Conversion theory has been applied to the study of Thomas Merton''s conversion experience from different points of view. First, the stages of Merton''s life were divided into childhood, student life and monastical life, and studied from the conversion theory''s point of view. Second, two important backbones of the Merton Conversion, i.e. Moral Conversion experience and Intellectual Conversion experience were studied in depth and their dynamics were considered. Third, through the two above conversion experiences, the special characteristics of Merton''s conversion experiences which are ''death'', and the pursuit or journey towards ''oneness'' through inner self, can be said to be the core concept of his conversion and spirituality.
Lastly, the modern meaning and significance of Merton''s Conversion experiences are considered. This part is the ultimate stage of Conversion and also the result of sociopolitical conversion as overall expression mode. In particular, an effort was made to verify that the rejection of violence that he suggests is the fundamental insight into the future possibilities for peace among mankind, and an answer to overcome the moral crisis of our times, and to revive humanity.
