The first purpose of this dissertation is to describe delicately the change of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ of Gyeonggi Hwaseong dialect from the late of 20th century to the early of the 21th century. The second purpose of this paper is to explain the cause of the differences of change rate and to show the phonological explanation about the cause of change in ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’.
To accomplish these purposes, this paper examines the field survey data of that country and phonetic transcription data for about 20 years and thereby tries to describe the change of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’. Through these data, it tries to explain the cause of change rate and phonological interpretation.
In chapter 2, it distinguishes a casual speech of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ variation from a formal speech of that. It makes a foundation of diachronic change delicately with finding out phonetic variation showing ongoing processes of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ changing.
In chapter 3, with comparing the description of chapter 2 with phonetic transcription data of the late of 20th century, the changing process of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ of the late of 20th century and the early of 21th century proves that ‘ㅟ’ becomes /uy/>/wi/>/ü/>/i/ and ‘ㅚ’ becomes /ö/>/e/. The existence and types of preceding consonant at substantive affects the change rate of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ differently according to the preceding of ending begun by consonant or the preceding of ending begun by vowel.
In chapter 4, it explains the cause of the difference of change rate in ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’. The causes are two; ‘The correlation of preceding consonant at 4.1.1’ and ‘The correlation of following vowel at 4.1.2’. The former case is shown up by preceding consonants of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ and the naturalness of sequence. The later case happens to evade the hiatus of the vowel of stem at a declinable word. This article refers to the feasibility of performing change in front of vowel rather than consonant.
At 4.2, it explains the correlation between the change of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ and phonological system and phonological rule. It reexamines the changing process of ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ to describe this paper delicately. Particulary, It investigates the possibility for the change of ‘ㅟ’ to become /oy/>/we/>/ö/>/e/.
Next, at 4.2.1, it explains the correlation between the change ‘ㅟ’ and ‘ㅚ’ and phonological system. It suggests that change of /uy/>/wi/, /ü/>/i/, /oy/>/we/, /ö/>/e/ is the result of effort to accomplish for the unmarked phonological system. At 4.2.2, it investigates that the umlaut rule is related with the formation of /ü/ and /ö/. In Hwaseong dialect, there is no possibility for the umlaut rule to be related with the formation of /ü/ and /ö/. In Hwaseong dialect of the late of the 20th century and the early of the 21th century, the disappearing phenomenon of /ü/ and /ö/ is explained with appling to umlaut rule.
Last, in chapter 5, it summarizes this paper and refers to the remaing problems to be solved.

본 연구의 첫 번째 목적은 경기 화성 지역어를 대상으로 20세기 말에서 21세기 초까지 일어난 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’의 변화를 정밀하게 기술하는 것이다. 두 번째 목적은 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’ 변화 과정의 정밀한 기술을 통해 드러난 변화 속도 차이의 원인을 밝히고, ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’ 변화의 원인에 대한 음운론적 해석을 하는 것이다.
2장에서는 화성 지역어에 나타나는 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’의 변이에서 일상적 발화와 격식적 발화에서 나타나는 변이를 구분하고, 일상적 발화의 음성적 변이가 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’ 변화의 중간 과정을 보여준다는 것을 밝혔다.
3장에서는 2장의 기술과 20세기 말 음성 전사 자료를 비교하여 20세기 말에서 21세기 초까지 나타난 ‘ㅟ’의 변화는 /uy/>/wi/>/ü/>/i/, ‘ㅚ’의 변화는 /ö/>/e/라는 것을 밝혔다. 그리고 이를 통해 기존 연구에서 언급된 /ü/>/wi/, /ö/>/we/ 변화의 설명이 타당하지 않다는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’가 있는 체언의 변화 속도는 선행 자음의 유무와 종류에 따라, 용언 어간 말 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’의 변화 속도는 후행하는 어미의 종류에 따라 다르게 나타나는 것을 밝혔다.
4장에서는 먼저 3장을 통해 확인된 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’의 변화 속도가 다르게 나타나는 원인을 밝혔다. 4.1.1에서는 선행 자음과 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’ 연쇄의 음성적 자연성에 의해 변화 속도의 차이가 발생한다는 것을 보였다. 4.1.2에서는 모음 충돌을 회피하기 위해 모음어미 앞에서 용언의 어간 말 모음 /ü/가 /i/로 빠르게 변화한다는 것을 언급하였다.
다음으로 4.2에서는 음운 체계, 음운 규칙과 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’의 변화가 어떠한 관계에 있는지 살펴보았다. 4.2.1의 논의에 앞서 ‘ㅟ’, ‘ㅚ’의 음운론적 변화 과정을 재검토하였는데, 특히 ‘ㅚ’의 변화가 /oy/>/we/>/ö/>/e/일 가능성에 대해 논증해보았다. 4.2.1에서는 /uy/>/wi/, /oy/>/we/, /ü/>/i/, /ö/>/e/의 변화가 무표적 체계를 지향하기 위해 나타날 수 있다는 것을 밝혔다. 다음으로 4.2.2에서는 화성 지역어에서 움라우트 규칙에 의해 /ü/, /ö/가 형성되었을 가능성이 적다는 것을 언급하였다. 그리고 이 지역어에서 /ü/, /ö/가 사라져가는 모습을 움라우트 규칙 적용 여부에 의해서 관찰할 수 있다는 사실도 보였다.
마지막으로 5장에서는 지금까지 논의된 내용을 요약하고, 남은 문제점들과 앞으로 해결해야 할 과제들을 언급하였다.
