Woolf, in her representative modernist novel Mrs. Dalloway, does not follow the precedent ways in depicting character and setting, but she employs her new way in embodying the reality of the human nature. Before finishing writing Mrs. Dalloway, Woolf argues that modern novelists need to adopt new ways to create and develop character in fiction writing in her essay “Character in Fiction.” According to her argument, Edwardians only focuses on describing the external setting or objects, not giving any importance to hear the character’s voice. In Mrs. Dalloway, her theory is reflected, but critics’ opinions were crossed on her new technique in depicting character.
Woolf’s character creation is rather close to the embodiment of human nature than the realistic description. Her impressionistic description of character seemed to some critics vague and discrepant. Especially, her trial to fuse character and setting does not give clear picture to the critics. However, there also exist as many positive opinions as negative ones on her new trial in character creation. According to the favorable opinion on her new technique, Woolf depicts her character with the physical and spiritual features of setting, so that she achieves the whole impression of the two interrelation. With these effects of her new techniques, Woolf achieves the details of how to use features of setting by connecting it with characters’ consciousness. In this sense, Mrs. Dalloway signifies Woolf’s another example of how to describe setting in fiction.
Based on these opinions of Woolf’s contemporaries, this thesis will examine how Woolf organically interrelates characters’ psychological turns and physical and spiritual features of setting as a whole impression. In this process, I will discuss how to explain the vagueness and discrepancy of the characters and setting. Thus, the mechanism that Woolf uses in combining character and setting will be examined by looking into the relations between Clarissa and the two setting, London and the party.

버지니아 울프(Virginia Woolf) 의 가장 대표적인 모더니즘 소설인 『댈러웨이 부인(Mrs. Dalloway)』은 그 인물을 그려내는 기법에 있어서 전통적인 방법을 따르지 않고 인간성을 보다 실제적으로 구현하기 위해 새로운 방법을 적용했다. 『댈러웨이 부인』이 완성되기 전, 울프는 소설창작에 있어서 인물의 인간성을 보다 현실적으로 그려내기 위해, 기존의 에드워디언즈(Edwardian) 소설가들의 방법을 버릴 것을 주장한다. 아놀드 베넷(Arnold Bennett)으로 대표되는 에드워디언즈는 등장인물의 주변 사물이나 배경을 지나치게 구체적이고 객관적으로 묘사했다. 그녀의 그런 새로운 주장은 『댈러웨이 부인』에 잘 반영되었으나, 그작품에 나타난 새로운 기법에 대한 각 영국 문인들의 반응은 엇갈렸다.
울프의 인물 묘사는 사실적인 모습보다는 의식의 흐름으로 불리워지는 인간의 내면 묘사에 더 가까운 것이었다. 당시 몇몇 작가들은 울프의 기법이 작품의 의미를 모호하게 했으며, 인물과 배경이 불일치를 이룬다고 비판했다. 그러나 작품의 새로운 기법에 대한 긍정적인 반응도 많았다. 그것은 Woolf의 인간 내면 묘사가 외부의 사물에 잘 투영되어 인물과 배경이 통합된 인상을 남길 수 있었기 때문이었다. 이런 점에서 『댈러웨이 부인』은 사실상 Woolf가 그녀의 소론인 “Character in Fiction” 에서 구체적으로 논의되지 못한 배경과 인물 묘사의 상호성 또한 잘 드러난 작품이다.
이 논문에서는 당시의 상반된 논의를 바탕으로, 울프가 어떻게 인물과 배경을 유기적으로 결합했으며, 하나의 인상을 이루어냈는지 살펴볼 것이다. 또한 이 논문에서 이루어지는 분석은 당시 Mrs. Dalloway 의 인물묘사와 배경의 모호성과 불일치에 대한 문제 제기에 대한 구체적인 답변을 이끌어 내는 과정이 될 것이다. 인물묘사와 배경묘사의 상호성을 살펴보기 위해, 본 필자는 이 논문을 두 장으로 나누어, 주요 인물인 클라리사 댈러웨이(Clarissa Dalloway)와 대도시 런던(London)과 그녀의 파티를 중심으로, 울프가 『댈러웨이 부인』에서 새롭게 시도한 인물과 배경을 통합의 매커니즘을 살펴볼 것이다.
