어린이들이 있는 그대로 사랑받고 있음을 깨닫고, 이웃과 용서하고 화해를 이루며 살도록 돕는 종교교육은 현대 사회에서 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 또한 대중매체의 홍수 속에서 자라나는 어린이들을 위한 미디어 교육은 교회 안에서도 시급하게 연구되고 실행되어야 할 과제 중 하나이다. 특히 한국 가톨릭교회의 교육 현장에서는 다양한 미디어를 활용한 새로운 프로그램 개발이 우선적으로 요구되고 있다.
본 연구에서는 더욱 흥미롭고 효과적인 어린이 교리교육을 위해 초등학교 고학년을 대상으로 영화 “나니아 연대기: 사자, 마녀 그리고 옷장”(2005)을 활용한 미디어교수법을 개발하는 데 목표를 두었다.
이러한 목표를 달성하기 위해 다음 두 가지 연구 과제를 설정하였다.
첫째, 영화 “나니아 연대기: 사자, 마녀 그리고 옷장”의 내용을 분석하여 교리교육과 연계성을 파악한 후, 교리교육을 위한 교육내용 틀을 구성하는 것이다. 둘째, 영화 “나니아 연대기: 사자, 마녀 그리고 옷장”을 활용한 교리교수법을 개발하는 것이다.
이상의 연구 과제를 수행하기 위하여 먼저 가톨릭 교리교육의 지침과 내용을 살펴보고, 어린이 종교심리와 미디어 인지심리, 영화교육과 미디어 교육 교수법에 대한 이론을 고찰하였다. 또한 영화를 활용한 교리교수법을 개발하기 위해서 “문화비평적 프로그램 분석 방법”을 도입하여 체계적인 교수 설계를 시도하였다. 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 영화 “나니아 연대기: 사자, 마녀 그리고 옷장”의 내용 분석을 통해서 ‘믿음’, ‘사랑’, ‘희생’, ‘용서’, ‘화해’, ‘죄’, ‘구원’ 등의 교리적인 의미를 찾아낼 수 있었다. 따라서 이 영화는 가톨릭 주일학교의 초등학교 어린이를 위한 교리교육과 연계하여 활용할 수 있을 것으로 판단되었다.
둘째, 영화 “나니아 연대기: 사자, 마녀 그리고 옷장”을 활용한 4차시용 교수법을 개발하였다. 먼저 1차 사전기획단계를 통해 ‘유혹과 죄’, ‘용서와 화해’, ‘예수 그리스도의 죽음과 부활’이라는 교육주제와 관련된 영화 장면을 선택하였고, 2차의 학생들과 함께하는 수업에서는 선택한 영화 장면을 활용한 작업과 토론, 수업에 대한 평가단계까지 설계하였다.
이 연구 결과를 통해 다음과 같은 결론을 내릴 수 있다.
첫째, 영화를 비롯한 다양한 대중매체 프로그램을 어린이 교리교육에 활용할 수 있다. 그러기 위해서는 먼저 적절한 미디어 프로그램을 선택하고 내용 분석과 비평을 할 수 있는 교사의 미디어 능력이 요구된다.
둘째, 교사들의 미디어 능력을 계발하기 위해서는 먼저 교리교사들을 위한 전문적인 미디어 교육 프로그램이 마련되어야 한다.
셋째, 주일학교의 미디어 교육은 ‘종교 미디어 교육’이라는 맥락 안에서 실행되어야 할 것이다. 즉 대중문화 속의 그리스도교적인 가치관을 식별하여 활용할 뿐 아니라 상업 목적의 대중매체가 종교적인 진실과 이미지를 왜곡하는 ‘종교 유사성’에 대한 인식과 비평을 위한 교육이 포함되어야 할 것이다.

In today''s society, religious education has a very important role helping children to realize they are being loved for themselves as they are, and enabling them to live with their neighbors in forgiveness and reconciliation. Media education for children growing up in the deluge of mass media is one of the issues urgently needing research and implementation even in the Church. Especially on the education scene of the Catholic Church in Korea, the development of a new program utilizing various media is demanded as a priority.
In this present research, our goal is to develop a media education method for more interesting and effective children''s catechetical education for upper grade elementary school students by utilizing the 2005 film, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". To reach this goal, we established the following two research tasks.
The first task is analyzing the content of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", grasping its connection with catechetical education, then constructing a contextual framework. The second task is developing a catechetical method using this film.
To achieve this research task, we first examine the directives for and content of Catholic catechetical education; then we consider the religious and media-cognitive psychology of children, film education and the theories regarding methods of media education. Further, to develop a catechetical method using film, we attempt a systematic teaching plan drawing on the "cultural-critical method of analysis".
The results from this research are as follows.
First, by analysing the content of the film, we were able to find the catechetical sense of "faith", "love", "self-sacrifice", "forgiveness", "reconciliation", "sin", "salvation", etc. Consequently, we judged this film as an appropriate medium in catechetical education for elementary students in Catholic Sunday School.
Second, using this film on four (4) occasions, we developed a teaching method. Through a pre-planning phase we first chose the subjects "temptation and sin", "forgiveness and reconciliation", "Jesus Christ''s death and resurrection" and corresponding film scenes; for class with the students, we planned work, discussion and even a class evaluation phase utilizing the chosen scenes from the film.
We are able to draw the following conclusions from this research.
First, beginning with film, it is possible to utilize various mass media programs in the catechetical education of children. For this to work, however, the teacher''s ability to choose appropriate media, and to analyze and critique its content in advance, is demanded.
Second, a professional media education program must be prepared for catechetical teachers in order for them to develop their media capabilities.
Third, Sunday School media education must be implemented within the context of "religious media education". In other words, not only must it be used to discern Christian values in the popular culture, but it must include education to recognize and critique mass media''s distortion of religious truths and images as "religious similarities" ― the objective of mass media is commercial.
