본 논문은 12세기의 그리스도교 사상가이자 신비가였던 힐데가르트 폰 빙엔(Hildegard von Bingen, 1098-1179)의 사상을 생명이라는 테마를 중심으로 조명하고 있다. 본 연구는 힐데가르트의 사상을 하나의 시각에서 해석하기 보다 그의 사상을 전체적으로 조망해보고, 그 안에서 힐데가르트의 독창적인 개념인 비리디타스(viriditas)를 텍스트 안에서 구체적으로 이해하고자 한다. 먼저, 12세기 힐데가르트의 생명 영성을 현대의 생태학을 재구성하는데 적용시키기 위해 먼저 비리디타스 영성이 갖는 의미와 가치를 살펴보고, 나아가 비리디타스 영성이 현대 사회에 적용될 수 있는 가능성을 모색해 보고자 한다. I장 서론에서는 연구의 목적과 과정을 살펴보며, 힐데가르트 사상에 대한 현대의 연구동향을 알아본다. II장에서는 힐데가르트의 생애와 함께, 힐데가르트의 사상이 가장 종합적으로 드러나 있는『신의 업적』(Liber Divinorum Operum)의 구조와 내용을 분석할 것이다. 또한 힐데가르트의 신비 경험의 특성을 알아보고, 힐데가르트 신비주의의 성격을 규명해보고자 한다. III장에서는 힐데가르트가 신과 인간, 그리고 자연을 어떻게 이해했으며, 각각의 관계를 어떠한 방식으로 규명했는지 살펴볼 것이다. IV장에서는 『신의 업적』과 서간집을 통해 비리디타스가 지닌 다차원적 함의를 알아볼 것이다. 비리디타스는 물리적 차원에서부터 우의적 차원, 도덕적 차원, 그리고 신적 차원에 이르기까지 그 함의하는 바가 대상에 따라 다양하게 드러난다. 이런 여러 차원에서 비리디타스는 힐데가르트가 가장 중시한 ‘생명’의 원리로서 작용하는 중심 개념이기도 하다. 따라서 비리디타스가 지닌 내적 원리인 생명의 원리와 통일성과 다양성의 원리를 살펴보고, 조화와 건강의 덕목을 짚어볼 것이다. 다차원적 비리디타스의 해석을 통해 힐데가르트가 생명을 어떻게 이해하고 있었으며, 그녀의 비리디타스 영성을 통한 생명 이해가 현대의 우리에게 어떠한 방식으로 접목되고 적용될 수 있는지 검토해보고자 한다. 결론인 V장에서는 힐데가르트의 비리디타스 영성에서 ‘생명’의 의미가 갖는 현대적 의의를 비판적으로 고찰하여 현대의 생명, 구체적으로 생태문제에 어떠한 기여를 할 수 있는지 알아볼 것이다. 또한 비리디타스 영성의 구체적 실현 가능성과 함께 비리디타스의 개념이 안고 있는 앞으로의 창조적 과제를 알아볼 것이다.

This thesis illuminates the thought of Hildegard von Bingen (1098 - 1179), a 12th century Christian thinker and mystic, focusing on her concept of life as found in her writings. The purpose of this study is to view the complete thought of Hildegard rather than in a specific perspective, and to understand ''viriditas'', her concept of ''greening power'' or ''green life-force'' as originally found in her writings. First, we will inquire into the meaning and significance of the spirituality found in viriditas and apply the concept of life from Hildegard''s 12th century-perspective regarding the reconstruction of ecology to the 21st century. In Chapter 1, we will first examine the purpose and methodology of our research, and second, trace the recent research on Hildegard and her continued influence. Chapter 2 summarizes her historical life and analyzes the structure and contents of The Book of Divine Works (Liber Divinorum Operum), considered the synthesis of her complete thoughts and life work. In so doing, we will explore the mystical experiences of Hildegard, and examine the characteristics of the mysticism in Hildegard. Chapter 3 provides the framework to understand her concepts of God, Human, and Nature separately and then their relationships to each other. In Chapter 4, an examination of the multi-dimensional implications of the concepts of viriditas through The Book of Divine Works and The Letters of Hildegard von Bingen will offer us keen insights in understanding how to adapt viriditas concepts in the 21st century. Viriditas appears in a variety of dimensions from the physical, allegorical, moral, and to the divine according to which dimension viriditas implies. It is within this multi-dimensional framework that provides the central concept of the ''principle of life,'' according to Hildegard and what she considered to be most important. Thus, the principle of life, unity, and diversity are the inner implications of viriditas that brings forth the virtues of harmony and health. And through the interpretation of the multi-dimensional concepts of viriditas, we can grasp how Hildegard understood the concept of life, and how we can apply the understandings of viriditas spirituality to our lives. We will conclude with the meaning of Hildegard''s concept of life, especially in the view of viriditas spiritualization, and the possibility of realizing her concepts and goals in modern times.
