Criticisms of Conrad have been made by classifying him into a certain scope or more recently by applying literary theories to him. The former method has contributed to comprehending Conrad in a specific vein. Biographically, Conrad''s being a Pole, his sea life, and his authorial career have been frames with which to understand Conrad. In terms of literary tradition, Conrad has been examined in line with adventure story, romance, and modernism. Also, Conrad has been studied as being influenced by David Hume and Walter Pater, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and Darwin. As studies on Conrad as such have been accumulated, now we can come closer to Conrad''s own perspective. Despite this fact, present mode of criticism is deviating from it. The misapplication of literary theories to Conrad seems to show a respect for theories at the expense of Conrad. This dissertation intends to generate the effect which Conrad studies compiled so far could have done. To this aim, two attempts are made. One is to let Conrad''s perspective emerge from his own writings. The other is to relate Conrad to a current of the age in which he lived. The former attempt has already been made by Edward Said; who tries to reveal Conrad''s psychology hidden behind his writings. This dissertation is distinct from Said''s, however, in that it pays attention to Conrad''s cognition rather than his psychology. There is a cognitive psychology; but, cognition is an object of study in diverse fields such as epistemology in philosophy and artificial intelligence in science as well as cognitive psychology; thus, cognition does not wholly fall into psychology. Conrad''s perspective dealt with in this dissertation falls into the study on his cognition; and, it is found to have a structure. At this point, Conrad''s perspective belongs to a current in the nineteenth-century Europe. A study on Conrad in relation to social milieu has been done by Mark A Wollaeger, Royal Roussel, Ian Watt, and others. They fail to find a possibility or a hope in Conrad, however, by connecting him to general milieu of decadence, nihilism, and fin de siecle. Unlike them, this dissertation asserts that a possibility or a hope, though vague, is inevitably found in Conrad owing to his structural perspective; through which he belongs to a current in the nineteenth-century Europe- the looming up of the structural perspective.

콘래드 연구는 주로 전기적 사실, 문학적 전통, 사상적 영향의 범주 안에서 이루어져 왔다. 전기적 사실에 관한 연구에서는 콘래드가 폴란드인이라는 사실과, 항해 생활, 그리고, 작가로서의 삶을 조망해 왔으며; 문학적 전통의 맥락에서는 모험과 항해 이야기를 다룬 작가로 보거나, 로망스 소설가로 해석하거나, 혹은 모더니즘으로 넘어가는 과정에 위치한다고 보았고; 사상적 영향의 측면에서는 데이비드 흄이나 월터 페이터, 쇼펜하우어와 니체, 그리고 다아윈의 영향 아래 있는 것으로 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 이러한 연구들의 성과로 인해 콘래드 연구는 콘래드라는 인물에 그리고 그의 시각에 보다 가까이 다가갈 수 있게 되었다. 그러나 최근 들어 유행처럼 번진 비평 이론의 적용으로 콘래드 연구에 전혀 새로운 흐름이 생겼다. 기대해온 결과와는 다른 방향으로 가고 있는 이 흐름에 대해 단정적으로 평가할 수는 없다. 그러나, 이러한 흐름이 이론의 틀에 맞추어 콘래드를 재단함으로써, 작가나 작품보다 이론 자체에 더 우위를 두고 있는 듯 비춰지는 것은 사실이다. 이 논문은 이러한 흐름에 반발하여 지금까지 축적되어 온 콘래드 연구가 만들어 낼 수 있는 효과를 만들어 내고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 위해 두 가지 시도가 이루어졌는데, 하나는 콘래드의 시각이 그의 글을 통해 드러나도록 하는 것이다. 이러한 시도는 특히 에드워드 사이드에 의해 이미 이루어진 바 있다. 그는 사적인 글과 공적인 글을 구분하여, 공적인 글은 독자를 의식하여 쓰여졌기 때문에 콘래드의 내면세계를 솔직하게 드러내지 못한다고 주장하였다. 그러나, 이 논문에서는 콘래드의 숨겨진 심리를 드러내기보다 콘래드의 인식체계를 살펴보고자 하였다. 콘래드의 인식체계를 살펴보면 그의 시각이 드러나는데, 그 시각은 구조를 가지고 있다. 이것을 콘래드의 ‘구조적 시각’이라 명명하였다. 바로 이 콘래드의 ‘구조적 시각’ 때문에, 콘래드는 그가 살았던 19세기에 눈에 띄게 두드러졌던 한 흐름에 속한다고 볼 수 있다. 여기서 이 논문의 두 번째 시도가 이루어 진다. 바로 콘래드를 이러한 19세기의 한 흐름과 연결시켜 이해하려는 것이다. 콘래드를 시대상황과 연관시켜 설명하는 방식은 비평 이론이나 좁은 범주의 틀에 매이지 않고 비교적 자유롭게 콘래드를 조망하기 때문에, 보다 더 콘래드에 가까이 접근 할 수 있다고 본다. 이러한 연구는 특히 마크 월리거, 로얄 러셀, 그리고 이안 와트에 의해 이루어 졌다. 그러나, 이들의 연구는 콘래드를 19세기 유럽 전반의 시대상황인 세기말적 허무주의와 직접적으로 연결시켰기 때문에, 콘래드의 시각과 태도를 비관적인 것으로 해석해내고 있다. 이와 달리, 본 논문은 콘래드의 ‘구조적 시각’이 19세기 유럽의 세기말적 상황에서 생겨난 다양한 반응들 가운데 하나인 ‘구조적 시각’과 맥을 같이 한다고 주장한다. 그리고, 그러한 시각 때문에 콘래드는 비관적이기만 한 것이 아니라, 희망과 가능성을 제시한다고 주장하는 것이다.
