초록/요약
Henry David Thoreau는 19세기 미국 사회의 경제적 사회적 관습을 거부한 사람으로 잘 알려져 있다. Walden은 그가 2년 2개월 간 사회를 떠나 호숫가에서 살았던 경험을 바탕으로 기록한 작품이다. 이 작품은 궁극적으로 사람이 스스로의 인생을 어떻게 살아야 하는가 라는 명제에 대한 Thoreau의 생각이다. 정치적으로는 자유를 선언했으나 정신적으로는 물질주의의 노예가 되어있는 미국인들을 비판하면서 Thoreau는 그 시대의 정치적이고 사회적인 문제들을 해결하고자 했으며 자유를 성취하기 위해서 도덕적 쇄신이 필요함을 주장하였다. 또한 그는 도덕적 쇄신을 개인적인 차원에서 시작하여 사회적인 차원으로 발전시켜야 한다고 보았다. 그리하여 개인의 변화가 사회의 변화를 유도할 수 있다는 신념을 작품에서 보이고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 Thoreau가 실용적 개혁가였다는 점에 주목하고자 한다. 또한 본고의 목적은 Henry David Thoreau의 Walden에 나타난 Alternative Economy가 작품의 주제인 자유의 성취와 어떠한 연관성을 가지는가를 살펴봄으로써 Thoreau가 추구했던 자유의 개념을 19세기 미국의 사회적 경제적 상황 안에서 재정립해보고 그가 제안했던 삶의 방식을 자유를 경제적인 측면에서 구체적으로 실행하는 방편으로 이해하는 데 있다 삶의 문제는 인간의 물질적 부가 증가함에 따라 그 정도를 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 다양하고 복잡해졌다고 비판하면서 Thoreau는 Walden의 첫 번째 장인 Economy와 두 번째 장인 Where I lived and What I lived for에서 삶의 경제학을 제시하고 있다. 이 삶의 경제학은 Alternative Economy로 제시되며 그 근간을 이루는 것은 교환경제에 대한 거부, 자급자족, 소비 문명에 대한 비판이다. 인간의 노동은 교환체제에서 물질의 축적의 도구로 전락하여 시장경제가 개개인의 자유를 억압하는 상황에 이르렀다. 이에 Thoreau는 스스로 자급자족하며 소박하게 산다면 미국인들이 진정으로 추구하는 자유의 이상을 구체적으로 실현할 수 있다고 설파한다. 그리하여 정치 경제학을 배울 것이 아니라 삶의 경제학을 배워야 한다고 주장한다. Thoreau는 물질주의가 인간의 삶의 터전인 자연조차 상업화 하는 것에 분노한다. 그는 이에 자연을 도덕적 가치를 함양할 수 있는 터전으로 환원시키기를 촉구하며 Alternative Agriculture를 제안한다. Alternative Agriculture 역시 삶의 경제학의 한 부분으로 이해할 수 있는데 결국 개개인이 농업 역시 신성시 여기고 부의 축척의 방법으로 바라보지 않고 자기 자신을 수행하는 방법으로 바라본다면 경제적 자유를 성취하는 동시에 정신적 자유를 얻을 수 있다고 주장한다. 결국, Alternative Economy, 즉 삶의 경제학으로 대변되는 Thoreau의 삶의 방식은 19세기 당시 물질주의의 노예로 전락한 미국인들에게 자유를 성취할 수 있는 구체적인 실천방안으로 제안되었고 개개인의 도덕적 쇄신을 촉구하는 Thoreau의 삶의 방식은 현대 사회의 물질문명이 가진 병폐를 해결할 수 있는 대안으로까지 이해될 수 있다고 할 수 있겠다.

This thesis aims to find the ways to understand the alternative economy as an enactment of liberty what Henry David Thoreau tried to figure out in Walden. As an individualist and transcendentalist, Thoreau always emphasized the liberated self. Even though a considerable number of studies have been made on the theme of liberty in Walden, however, it is noteworthy that little attention has been given to the point of what kind of liberty Thoreau has tried to achieve. Therefore, I offer here the political and economic aspect of liberty in Walden and the alternative economy as an enactment of liberty. Chapter I mainly focused on the alternative economy. With the alternative economy, Thoreau suggests the enactment of liberty. Showing the development of liberty, he depicts the relationship between economy and liberty. With his alternative economy, Thoreau has tries to liberate people from the enslavement of the marketplace. The alternative economy falls into two categories: one is simple living and the other is the work of hands Chapter II mainly deals with the meaning of nature and the alternative agriculture in Walden in terms of economic liberty. He considers husbandry as the alternative of made of living especially for enactment of liberty for individuals. He suggests the alternative agriculture makes possible the liberation of farmers. Finally in his bean field, he declares his cultivation is not only for material security but also for the spiritual development, that is, liberty. Conclusion reaffirms Thoreau has brought the subject of the mode of living as the method of liberation of self in Walden. He depicts the importance of economic liberty of individuals. To enact economic liberty, he has shown the simple living and the work of hands as alternatives for people. Nature is the place for self-cultivation strongly related with the enactment of liberty. That is to say, Walden is the suggestion of Thoreau’s alternative economy against the materialism of nineteenth century American society. Moreover, his suggestion is relevant to contemporary society in the liberation of self in marketplace.
