본 논문은 각 종교전통이 궁극적인 하나의 목표 - 그것이 구원이든 , 해탈이든 - 를 가지고 있으며, 비록 제한된 형태이기는 하지만 종교각각이 그 자체의 가치와 유효성을 가지고 있다는 종교다원주의적 가정에 기초하고 있다. 이러한 기초에 기반하여 나는 한국의 12세기 정토신앙가인 요세의 사상적 중요성과 그의 정토신앙을 칼 라너의 하나님의 자기양여개념을 통해 고찰해 볼 것이다. 요세의 신행에는 대립되어지는 두 요소가 있었다. 그 하나는 자력으로 해탈의 길에 이르는 원돈지관의 한 행법으로서의 법화삼매이며, 또 다른 하나는 아미타불에 대한 전적인 의존을 통해 구원에 이르는 것을 구하는 염불이다. 요세는 아마도 이 대립되어지는 두 요소에 대해 상당한 기간 고민하였을 것으로 여겨지며, 마침내 자력이나 타력 어느 한 쪽에도 치우치지 않는 중도의 길인 천태묘해를 얻게 된다. 이러한 그의 천태묘해를 칼 라너의 신학적 개념을 통해 해석하는 것은 우리들에게 불교와 기독교가 각자의 방식대로 지시하는 궁극적 실재에 대한 어떤 공통된 측면을 발견할 수 있도록 해줄 것이다. 다시 말해 이 논문에서의 시도는 인간의 구원문제에 있어 궁극적 실재의 능동적 역할을 강조하게 될 것이며, 정토불교와 선불교 나아가 기독교와 불교에의 상호 공감적 이해를 도울수 있을 것이다.

This paper is based on the pluralist assumption that each religious tradition aims for an ultimate common goal - salvation or enlightenment - and has its own validity and value, although limited. This assumption allows us to find some truth in another faith and to deepen the understanding of our own religion as well as others. On the basis of this, I will explore the significance of the 12th-century Korean Pure Land thinker Yose(了世, 1163-1245) and his thoughts on Pure Land Buddhism from Karl Rahner''s concept of the self-communication of God. There are two opposite factors in Yose''s practices: One is Pophywa Sammae(法華三昧, Lotus Meditation) as one method for Wondon Chigwan(圓頓止觀, Perfect and Sudden Meditation), which is intended to be enlightened through his own efforts. The other is reciting the name of Amida, which aimed for salvation through the total reliance on Amida. Yose probably struggled to solve the tension between the two opposite paths, and finally attained excellent understanding of Chontae teachings, the middle way not partial to either the path of self-power or that of other-power. To interpret such his understanding in light of Karl Rahner''s theological concept help us to find a common facet of the Reality that both indicate in their own ways. That is, such an attempt in this paper can accentuate an active role of the ultimate reality in salvation for human beings and help understand sympathetically Christianity and Buddhism as well as Pure Land Buddhism and Son Buddhism.
