이 연구는 통합형 어미를 식별할 수 있는 기준을 마련하고, 이를 바탕으로 19세기 문헌 자료의 검토를 통해 ‘원인’ 통합형 접속어미를 설정한 다음에 그 쓰임을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 2장에서는 통합형 어미를 논의하기 위한 기본적인 개념들을 살핀다. 우선 통합형 어미를 정의하고 그 식별 기준을 설정한다. 그리고 통합형 어미의 구성 성분을 확인하기 위한 형태 분석 방법으로, 통시적 형태 분석과 계열 관계와 통합 관계를 이용한 공시적 형태 분석 방법에 대해 논의한다. 마지막으로 문법화를 정의하고 통합형 접속어미는 기존에 존재하던 둘 이상의 문법 형태소가 결합하여 새로운 문법 형식이 형성된 경우임을 보인다. 3장에서는 2장의 내용을 토대로 하여, 19세기 국어의 ‘원인’ 통합형 접속어미 목록을 설정한다. 이 글에서 연구 대상으로 하는 통합형 접속어미는 19세기에 새로 형성된 접속어미와 19세기 이전에 형성된 접속어미로 나뉜다. 19세기에 새로 출현한 접속어미는 그 형성 과정을 구체적으로 논의하고 통합형 어미의 식별 기준을 적용시켜 본다. 19세기 이전에 형성된 접속어미는 그 형성 과정에 대한 선행 연구를 정리하고 19세기 공시태 안에서 여전히 통합형 어미로 처리될 수 있는지 식별 기준을 적용시켜 본다. 그리고 19세기에 새로 나타나며 접속의 기능을 하면서 ‘원인’의 의미를 드러내는 통사적 구성에 대해 간략하게 논의한다. 4장에서는 ‘원인’ 통합형 접속어미의 형태·통사적 특징에 대해 논의한다. 통합형 접속어미의 통사적 특징을 논의하기 위해 선행절에서의 주어 통합 관계, 서술어 통합 관계, 선문말 어미 통합 관계를 살피고 후행절에서의 문체법을 확인한다. 더불어 표기와 관련 형식에 대해서도 살핀다. 이 과정에서 통합형 접속어미의 의미 기능도 살핀다. 5장에서는 논의를 요약하고 남은 과제에 대해 언급함으로써 결론으로 삼는다.

This thesis aims to establish the criteria to identify compound endings and present the list of ‘causal’ conjunctive compound endings of the 19th century Korean on the basis of historical literatures. And I reveal synchronic morpho-syntactic characteristics of ‘causal’ conjunctive compound endings. In Chapter 2, I focus on the fundamental notions to discuss compound endings. First, I define the compound ending and establish the criteria to identify compound endings. Then, I discuss morphological analyses in the view of diachronie and synchronie. Lastly, I define grammaticalization and claim that the conjunctive compound ending results from the combination of grammatical morphemes. In Chapter 3, I extract ‘causal’ conjunctive compound endings on the discussions in Chapter 2. Conjunctive compound endings are divided into two classes. The one is the conjunctive endings that have been formed in the 19th century and the other is the conjunctive endings that have been formed prior to the 19th century. Related to the former, I examine the process of formation and apply the criteria to identify compound endings. Related to the latter, I introduce the process of formation that had been dealt with in previous studies and apply the criteria to identify compound endings. In addition, I discuss newly appeared syntactic constructions which consist of ‘ending-particle’ or ‘ending-ending’. These constructions have been used to connect clauses with causal meaning in the 19th century. In Chapter 4, I discuss the morpho-syntactic characteristics of ‘causal’ conjunctive compound endings. To explain the syntactic characteristics, I examine the properties of subject, the properties of predicate and syntagmatic relations of pre-final endings in the preceding clause and sentence types in the following clause. Futhermore, I examine transcription and related forms. In the discussion I explain the meanings of conjunctive compound endings. In Chapter 5, I summarize the discussion and present the remaining problems for the future research.
