This study examines all kinds of poetry printed in The Korea Daily News (大韓每日申報) from the diachronic view. Most poems that appeared in the newspaper were anonymous and written by nonprofessional writers or editors. They did not compromise with the reader's taste and commercialism, and moreover, they put emphasis on the spirit of resistance, national salvation, and loyalty against the power of foreign countries, especially Japanese colonial policy. Three main types of poetry in The Korea Daily News are poetry of 4·4 syallable meter that has a stanza composed of two lines, a type of “kasa”(an old form of Korean verse) of 4·4 syallable meter, and “sijo”-typed (three-verse Korean poem)“tanga”(a kind of short poem). The contents of each type of poetry can be summarized as follows. First, there appear about fifty pieces of 4·4 syllable meter poem. The theme of those poems is based on the spirit of resistace against Japan and national rescue. It seems to reflect national situation of the times. In these poems, we find the characteristic of eloquence. Second, about 650 pieces of 4·4 syllable meter “kasa”are found in The Korea Daily News, and it is a typical type of poetry at that time. The main subject of them are nationalism and the idea of civilization. That is, the nationalism is expressed in the shape of struggle to protect national power, and the idea of civilization asserts the internal reformation and advancement of civilization on basis of our national identity. Third, about 400 pieces of “sijo”-typed “tanga”appear in the newspaper. They were written by nonprofessional writers and published anonymously like other types of poetry in those days. The poems of this type also patriotism and resistant spirit rather than the scenery of nature and human affairs frequently found in old “sijo”.
