「大韓每日申報」의 論說分析 : Content Analysis of the Editorials of The Korea Daily News

초록/요약

The result of the content analysis of this survey can be summed up as follows. First of all, the analysis of the subjects of the editorials of The Korea Daily New(大韓每日申報) shows that the Korean domestic problems were the most frequently dealt matter followed by the editorials on the theme of Japanese policy on Korea. It also showed that during the years 1906∼1907 the argument concerning Japanese politica land diplomatic interest in the Korean affairs appeared most frequently, while showing sharp decrease from the year 1908. However, it demonstrates that there was also a sharp increase in the subject dealing with Korean domestic problems from the year 1908. Secondly, matters concerning the international relations were the third frequent subject to which the editorials of The Korea Daily News attached importance. Among these, the Russo-Japanese war accounts for about 50% of the editorials contributed to the international relations. This, in the years 1904 and 1905, to the affairs of the Russo-japanese War. These editorials, usually written in English by Bethell and translated into Korean by a Korean reporter to be carried both in the English version and the Korean version show very strong pro-Russian tendency. Thirdly, among the Korean domestic affairs sud-classified into a few frequently dealt sudjects, educational topic occupies the formost position. Next to the theme of education, topics concern-ing the preservation of Korean national spirit was given impor-tance to. In addition to those two, the criticisms against the pro-Japanese press, governmental policies, the corruption and inefficiency in the government and the unity of the Korean people were the matters that were also frequently dealt with in the editorials of The Korea Daily News. A qualitative approach was made upon a few significant subjects based on this quantitative analysis. As a result the following can be pointed out. Firstly, a very close observation of the editorials of The Korea Daily News about the time of the signing of the Eul Sa Treaty indicates that the editorial staff of The Korea Daily News didn't appear to have a knowledge or understanding penetrating into the nature of the imperialism. Secondly, The Korea Daily News, though very critical and specific about the Japan's imperialistic policy toward Korea did not give much critical effort to the intrinsic problems sttributed to the ‘foreign adviser to the Korean cabinet’system, or ‘Protection'. Thirdly, it is very difficult to understand why The Korea Daily News was so bent to Russia when it dealt the Russo-Japanese War. I think there should be further study on this question. Fourth, it may be assumed that the anti-Japanese argument of The Korea Daily News might have exerted a disturbing influence upon Japan in carrying out her vicious and aggressive policies toward Korea. It is supposed that the influence of the English version of The Korea Daily News was substantial. Finally, the editorials of The Korea Daily News are viewed as the breakthough in the history of the Korean press as they dealt the major issues based mainly on the news as the subject matter of their editorials, while those of Doknip Shinmun devoted much of its effort in enlightening the Korean people dealing in their editorials mostly the topics without much relevance with ‘news'.
