Media education is a field of research which draws increasing attention in view of the complex mass media environment of the society we live in. Nonetheless, media education research seems to be given insufficient amount of professional endeavors in the light of its considrable importance. The study of media education deals with both the mass communication fields and the education areas. And it is to be analysed from two different perspectives; the research dimension and the practice dimension. The followings are key subjects of this paper. First, the definition of media education concepts and the understanding of related research trends. Second, the media education research as part of mass media studies. The seven research fields are critical social analysis, political economy perspective, environmental perspective, psychological perspective, cultural perspective, libertarian perspective, and evaluative research. Third, the research of media education as an element of education studies, the nature of education, the media education in classroom and the media education as a lifelong education. Fourth, the new research areas for media education and the problems involved in media education in Korea. And problems of the media education in Korea can be summarized as follows. A. It is necessary to properly understand the media education research. B. The theory of media education. Suitable to Koreans needs to be developed. C. Coorperation is need between researchers and educators. D. Long-term media education centered on TV must expand to include the print media education. F. Publication of media education research materials and critical activites for media culture and other monitoring movements are requested. G. In Korea, the media education in accordance with social changes is needed.
