가정교육에서의 부모의 역할 : Family Education and Parents' Role

초록/요약

Since we are having in 1994 The International Year of the Family, as enacted by the United Nations, it is very meaningful and significant for professionals to re-examine the MEANING OF OUR LIVES and our responsibility to help people for their personal growth so as to build ㅁ better world. As Fr. Chung(정의채)said, at the sixth symposium of The Research Insitute for the Life and Culture, life is an unconditional gift from God and from human beings. It is a gift to the cannot be rdpeated under any condition, and it shows the uniqueness of human life. As Fr. Chung mentioned at the symposium, life is the product of love: all creatures exist and grow only when love also exists. Life naturally is essentially love. The word "life" implies many twosided aspects: simplicity and complexity, absoluteness and relativity, creativity and imitativeness, wholeness and individuality, infinity and finity, softness and stiffness, resurrection and death. But in all of these aspects, life becomes meaningful only through love. Each human being must develop his/her skills of love in order to survive and help others survive in the world together. Only when love and life are integrated and interacted, can an individual's life become meaningful and a person extend his/her helping hand for other people. But, when can we learn how to love oneself and love others? Learning how to love oneself and others begins within each individual's family. We all are aware that when a child grows in loving environment. The child grows to love others and becomes a responsible person. As such, he/she also can take the responsibility to support and be supported by others in the family, in the school, in the workplace, and in society. In other words, human beings need to learn from the nursery to tomb to achieve our ultimate goal, the healthy and peaceful life. There exists, however, a dilemma between our personal goal and our on going situation in the work. In particular, present Korean society contains numerous conflicts and problem, such as conflicts of needs, the generation gap, ill-oriented educational system, and changing values, and attitudes toward education. In this scene, it is not strange to see that we members of modern Korean society, face generational, social, and individual conflicts that have risen from the fall of old political ideologies, from the new wave of democracy, and from the confilct between individual needs and social values. In this situation, Professionals, like ourselves, needs and social values. In this situation, professionals, like ourselves, need to develop and improve our counseling methods to respect the individual's needs while helping people to practice their rights to be healthy members in the society. In order to deal with the many confilcts of a rapidly changing world, the United Nations used for the celebration of the International Year of the Family is the recognition of the family as the smallest but most essential core factor of a healthy society. What, then, can we professionals do to meet the needs and demands by way of endless competition and punishment in order to prevent further problems or simply trying to solve existing conflicts or turing only to science are not the best approaches. Rather, we must perceive the problems as opportunities for personal and mutual growth. Now is the time to realize the necessity of reexamining and reevaluating the role of the function of the family. The mission and task of counselors, educators, and parents are to build democratization and peace in each family. The most practical theory and therapy which I have found to help us solve various everyday conflicts and help people live with peace of mind are RT(Reality Therapy) and PET(Parents Effective Training). Created by two modern psychologists, William Glasser and Thomas Gordon. William Glasser, psychologist as well as psychriatrist, defined the mature person as one who has a capacity to choose one's own behavior, has a responsibility to ones's choice, believes in him/herself, and enjoys his/her rights while respecting others' rights. Thomas Gordon, a professional counselor, developed Parent Effectivesness Training program. He invented the problem while maintaining to respect for and acceptance of others. He emphasized the importance of family relationships and emphasized the need for healthy family functions. The two approaches to solve problems and conflicts invite us to look into the family setting as every person's first and foremost practical educational field. To help to strengthen each individual's potentiality for growth and to enhance skills in fostering human relations. The Korean Counseling Center opened in 1986. The Center researches various approaches for bettering the individual's quality of life, provides PET AND RT seminars and workshops, and counsels individuals with the slogan. "Do the best to help so that personal growth maybe experienced, and service together to make the better world." Parent Effectiveness Training and Reality Therapy. The Center's main programs of our rapidly changing society while helping the individual's growth? From morning till night, Human beings deal with all kinds of problems in the family, school, workplace, and even between strangers. We realize we can not avoid a problematic world, but we must try to make our lives in harmony with others amidst the many interpersonal problems that we encounter throughout our lives. Focusing on a problem itself aim to meet the individual's desire for a better and more responsible life and to meet the demands of the contemporary society. More than 20,000 people who have attended seminars and workshops conducted by 178 PET instructors of the Korea Counseling Center, from 1989 to 1993. The center believes that the democracy and peace of the society should begin at the each individual's home, where the individual's lifelong development continues until his/her death. The family should learn and practice skills of how to love, experience being loved by others, and develop responsibility for one's own behavior. In others words, the family should be the prime educational setting in which to learn human relationships and this learning environment continues until the end of one's life. PET and RT help parents acquire and practice effective parenting skills for their children and they help improve their marital relationships. Furthermore, when one family member become a healthy and responsible person through PET and RT, he/she become a role model for friends, for neighbors, for cites, for the country, and ultimately, reaches out of the peace of the global world.
