초록/요약
Productivity has now become an everyday word. Operations managers believe that productivity provides the overall efficiency of their firm. Although most managers want to do something about the productivity problem, many are unsure about what actions should be taken. So I have studied in this thesis the effective methods of improving productivity and the efficient method of measuring the productivity in the Korean firm level. Productivity growth depends on various factors. Technological innovation is clearly important. But needed new technology will only be developed through motivated employees led by qualified, people-oriented managers. If managers want to create a climate conductive to high productivity. their emphasis should be on effective communications, equitable wage, new job design and respect for the individual. Based on the above factors, I have studied the organization culture, including contingency theory and learning system, and the improvement of productivity through the reduction of labor transfer. Productivity should therefore, be thought of as an organization wide issue. In spite of this activity, productivity remains as one of the most elusive concepts. It remains elusive because of a lack of definitive theoretical measurement study. In this thesis I have tried to describe a theoretical framework for firm-level productivity measurement, especially about total productivity. The output of the firm as well as all inputs must be stated in a com-mon measurement unit. Also, to make productivity indexes comparable from period to period, each index must be adjusted to a base period value, This means that the output and all inputs for any year after the base year must be stated in terms of base year wons. I have stressed that some measure of total productivity must be used for most top level management decisions in Korean firms to avoid fallacy of partial productivity measures. I have given two cases to illustrate efficient measure of total producti-vity. Operations managers in Korean firms had better analysis the result of productivity measures to improve the productivity of their firms. Finally I stress that the same method of improving productivity and the efficient method of measuring the productivity cannot be applied to all firms. Each of the Korean firms should consider their external and internal environments and adopt the most effective and efficient method of impro-ving and measuring product in their unique environments.
